The English language is a testament to the evolution of human thought and culture. However, as the world rapidly transforms with emerging ideas and shifting social and cultural structures, our language remains largely static. The words we choose and the sentences we construct are often rigid, failing to reflect the fluidity and dynamism of contemporary society.
This is harmful. Because our language inherently favors the male form over its female counterpart, perpetuating sexism and gender discrimination. Science shows that language is one of the most powerful means through which sexism and gender discrimination are perpetrated and reproduced. If we aspire to build a society founded on equality and fairness, we must begin by transforming the very foundation of our communication: our language. The Unbiased Browser Project is an effort to narrow the gender gap embedded in our language. With various digital tools we try to raise awareness and inspire action.
The Equality Extension is our first effort in the shape of a browser plugin that will highlight and correct gender-biased words on the web. She/he GPT is a writing assistant that can help you write better, unbiased text. Soon we hope to launch even more initiatives.
Our ultimate goal is to develop an ever-expanding, freely accessible database of alternatives to gender-biased language. This resource will be available for everyone to use and embed, fostering a global shift in how we perceive and utilize language.
The Unbiased Browser Project is a movement striving to dismantle the subtle yet pervasive barriers of gender bias. Support us, because language shapes reality.
